This peice was the final project in my independent study of Spring 2008. The goal was to take a classic concept or story and reinvent it visually. I chose the storybook tale of Jack and the beantstalk as the basis for this attempt. My initial concepts were more eastern looking, however, midway through I opted to give the characters a more meso-american vibe. The giant is modeled after images I studied of ancient mayan statues while at the same time I drew inspiration from samurai masks. The surrounding landscape is a beanstalk conceptually pushed to the extreme; composed of millions of intertwining vines and leaves rather than one large stem.
